A way to synchronize models with seismic faults for earthquake forecasting: Insights from a simple stochastic model

چکیده
Numerical models are starting to be used for determining the future behaviour of seismic faults and fault networks. Their final goal would be to forecast future large earthquakes. In order to use them for this task, it is necessary to synchronize each model with the current status of the actual fault or fault network it simulates (just as, for example, meteorologists synchronize their models with the atmosphere by incorporating current atmospheric data in them). However, lithospheric dynamics is largely unobservable: important parameters cannot (or can rarely) be measured in Nature. Earthquakes, though, provide indirect but measurable clues of the stress and strain status in the lithosphere, which should be helpful for the synchronization

Insights into the Aftershocks and Inter-Seismicity for Some Large Persian Earthquakes
This paper focuses on aftershocks behavior and seismicity along some co-seismic faults for large earthquakes in Iran. The data of aftershocks and seismicity roughly extracted from both the Institute of Geophysics the University of Tehran (IGUT) and International Seismological Center (ISC) catalogs. Apply some essential methods on 43 large earthquakes data; like the depth, magnitude as well as t...
متن کاملRecent 2017-2018 Seismicity and News Seismic Hazard Zoning of Iran
On November 12, 2017, at 18:18 UTC, a major earthquake with moment magnitude Mw7.3 struck the Kermanshah province of Iran, causing extended damage and casualties. Thus, we explore seismicity preceding this earthquake, with the aim to understand whether the information from past events could provide some insights about the occurrence of this and other future large earthquakes. Taking into accou...
متن کاملThe Lattice Solid Model: towards a realistic simulation model for earthquake micro-physics and the development of a virtual laboratory for the earthquake cycle
A realistic numerical simulation model for all physical processes underlying the earthquake phenomenon on HPC's would provide a powerful tool to study fault behavior and earthquake nucleation. The microphysical particle-based Lattice Solid Model (LSM) currently being developed at QUAKES provides a basis on which to construct such a model. Presently, the model simulates stress transfer, seismic ...
متن کاملA Ten-Year Earthquake Occurrence Model for Italy
The recent Mw 6.3 destructive L’Aquila earthquake has further stimulated the improvement of the Italian operational earthquake forecasting capability at different time intervals. Here, we describe a medium-term (10-year) forecast model for Mw ≥5:5 earthquakes in Italy that aims at opening new possibilities for risk mitigation purposes. While a longer forecast yielded by the national seismic-haz...
متن کاملSeismic Data Forecasting: A Sequence Prediction or a Sequence Recognition Task
In this paper, we have tried to predict earthquake events in a cluster of seismic data on pacific ring of fire, using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The model is employed as either a predictor for a sequence prediction task, or a binary classifier for a sequence recognition problem, which could alternatively help to predict an event. Here, we explain that sequence prediction/r...
